Cardiology Masterclass

The Cardiology Masterclass is a national, virtual special educational program implemented by the Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC). Launched in March 2021, the program aims to improve diagnostic accuracy and strengthen clinical decision-making and presentation skills among DM/DNB cardiology trainees and early-career cardiologists in India.

Currently supported through sponsorship by Lupin Ltd., the program is delivered through monthly clinical grand rounds and inter-institutional quiz sessions. Student-led, case-based discussions guided by senior experts, along with expert-moderated quizzes, reinforce core concepts, enhance communication skills, and help participants acquire strong foundations in all aspects of cardiology.

To date, the program has conducted 70 sessions, with an average attendance of 174 participants per session, engaging 1,315+ participants and 168+ faculty nationwide. Additionally, 3% of participants are from outside India, indicating the program’s expanding reach and demand beyond national boundaries.

The Cardiology Masterclass is delivered through a structured academic and operational framework led by CCDC. The program is overseen by a Program Director, and a Masterclass Chairman, and is supported by eight Advisory Board Members and a ten-member of National Program Coordination Committee. This governance structure ensures strong academic oversight and alignment of session content with evolving clinical practice.

The program is delivered through a monthly, webinar-based format, with sessions scheduled on Saturday evenings to enable trainee participation while accommodating clinical responsibilities.

The Masterclass comprises two core session formats: Clinical Grand Rounds (CGRs) and Inter-Institutional Quiz sessions. CGRs follow a standardized, student-led, case-based learning approach, featuring presentations of real-world clinical cases by trainees, guided by an expert panel of renowned cardiology leaders. This format aims to enhance understanding of the diverse clinical manifestations of heart diseases through structured discussion and expert mentorship. In contrast, the Inter-Institutional Quiz sessions are theme-based, expert-moderated academic competitions designed to reinforce core concepts, stimulate active learning, and promote healthy academic engagement among trainees.

Participant outreach is conducted through targeted communication with accredited DM/DNB cardiology medical colleges and early-career cardiologists affiliated with hospitals and academic institutions. Registrations are centrally managed to ensure appropriate participant profiling and balanced institutional representation.

The program is implemented in phases, enabling the gradual expansion of the participant base. Annual review meetings with Advisory Board members provide academic oversight, while monitoring at both the session and phase levels ensures consistency and rigor. Systematic post-session feedback further supports iterative refinement of session formats and the progressive inclusion of advanced topics. To date, four phases of the program have been successfully completed.
